WELCOME Welcome to Clifton, Texas! We abound with culture, recreation, education, health care and opportunity. The Bosque Conservatory of Fine Arts is an example of the culture Clifton offers. The building which houses the Conservatory was once Clifton Lutheran College. It has been remodeled and undergone a 2.2 million renovation and now attracts thousands of visitors annually. It holds classes in the arts, houses a permanent photography collection, an art gallery, and a performing arts group in the Tin Building Theatre annex. Clifton has twice been named one of the 100 best small art towns in America. We have nationally well known artists living in the area who have won some very prestigious awards and have been featured in numerous magazine articles and television documentaries. The Bosque Museum, established in 1924, houses memorabilia depicting the life style and crafts of the first Norwegian settlers in the area. They boast the largest display of Norwegian artifacts in the south and southwest. Also, visit “Sam”, the oldest known resident of Bosque County. He is a facial reconstruction of the adult male found at a site in the area. Artifacts found with Sam have been carbon dated at 9,500 years old. Norwegian history abounds in the Norse Historic District just outside Clifton. This is where the Father of Norwegian Immigration to Texas, Cleng Peerson, is buried and where the first Norwegians settled in the area. For more information please visit the Bosque County Chapter of the Norwegian Society of Texas. You will want to visit the Norwegian Smorgasbord each year in November, the handmade German sausage dinner in November and the Norwegian Christmas Home Tour the first weekend in December. Clifton is just a short 30 minute drive northwest of Waco, Texas on Highway 6. We are also only a 15 minute drive from Meridian State Park and Lake Whitney. We have some of the best deer, quail and dove hunting in the area. We offer RV hookups, a beautiful 9 hole golf course, hiking trails, fishing, camping, bird watching and star gazing. There is a nationally recognized quilt auction once per year, Fall Fest, German dinner and dance, a fair and youth rodeo, parades, and a host of other activities during the year. You will not want to miss the charm, beauty and friendliness of Clifton, Texas, the Norwegian Capital of Texas….and so much more! |
